Cross-party and All-Ireland commitment needed to tackle increased demand on mental health services – Flynn

Sinn Féin MLA, Órlaithí Flynn has urged for a renewed cross-party and all-Ireland commitment to tackle increasing demand and pressure on mental health services.

The Sinn Féin spokesperson for Mental Health said:

“Pre-pandemic mental health waiting lists were already at breaking point, but the avalanche of depression, isolation, loneliness and anxiety since the onset of Covid-19 has overwhelmed services.

“Sinn Féin has engaged with service providers, service users and advocacy groups locally and nationally. What we are witnessing here in the north is being mirrored across the island with alarming increases in depression, isolation, loneliness and anxiety.

“As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, accessing mental health services has become even harder. Pre-pandemic, mental health care waiting lists within the public system were at breaking point, now urgent action and investment is required before they collapse.

“Not only are the number of referrals increasing but the level of need and severity of cases require an even greater response.

“Now more than ever we need to ensure that mental health services are accessible and resourced for all those who need them. Nobody should be left behind.

“My Sinn Féin party colleague Mark Ward TD, will bring forward a motion to the Dáil calling for emergency action. There is a clear need for a similar response form the Department of Health in the north.”
