Sinn Féin spokesperson on Housing, Eoin Ó Broin TD, has said that the latest Mitchell McDermott construction sector report confirms that the government’s housing plan is failing.
The Dublin Mid-West TD has called on the new Minister for Housing James Browne to accept that the new Programme for Government is just more of the same and that a more radical approach is needed to tackle the housing crisis.
Teachta Ó Broin said:
“Today’s Mitchell MCDermott construction sector report confirms that the government’s housing plan is failing. The report makes clear that without radical change in housing policy new home completions will stagnate in 2025 and into 2026.
“The new Minister for Housing James Browne must now accept that the new Programme for Government is just more of the same and that a more radical approach is needed to tackle the housing crisis.
“Government must embrace the Housing Commission’s call for a ‘radical reset of housing policy’. They must revise their housing targets upwards in line with actual demand and dramatically increase investment in and delivery of social and affordable homes.
“Government must also introduce radical reforms to the delivery of public housing and new policies to activate the SME builder-developer sector to deliver more private homes for purchase.
“The time for bluff and bluster is over. The new Minister for Housing has an opportunity to change course.
“If he fails, supply will stagnate, house prices and rents will continue to rise and council waiting lists and numbers in emergency accommodation will continue to grow.”
