Concern as Developmental Checks for babies and toddlers in north Dublin frozen due to staff shortages – Denise Mitchell TD

Sinn Féin Dublin Bay North TD Denise Mitchell has expressed concern over the suspension of Developmental Checks for babies and children in north Dublin.

Speaking after she was contacted by a number of concerned parents, Deputy Mitchell said:

“I have been contacted by a number of parents who highlighted how their children are not getting the regular visits from the Public Health Nurse beyond the initial newborn check.

“These developmental assessment checks are so important in identifying any issues that might be of concern with a child and ensuring there is early intervention. As we know, the earlier an issue is identified then the better the outcome.”

Public Health Nurses visit the home shortly after the birth of a child and then assessments are conducted at regular intervals of three months, at nine months, at 21 months and at 48 months.

These examinations include physical checks and to evaluate responses, fine movements, vision, social, speech and play development.

“These checks are incredibly important for parents, particularly first time parents, who may have concerns about whether their child is reaching their developmental milestones. They have the added benefit of allowing parents to discuss any questions they have and providing reassurance,” says Deputy Mitchell.

Deputy Mitchell wrote to the new Health Minister to outline her concerns that a shortage of Public Health Nurses was resulting in the lack of checks.

In its response, the HSE confirmed that since January 2025 the Integrated Health Areas of Dublin North City and Dublin West are experiencing “resource pressures”.

“The new Health Minister needs to ensure we have adequate amounts of qualified staff to deliver care in the community,” Deputy Mitchell said.
