“Companies must live up to their green credentials or cease claim to them” – Chris MacManus MEP

Chris MacManus, MEP for Midlands North-West, has heralded the passing of the Green Claims Directive through the European Parliament as a win for transparency for consumers and accountability for companies.

Speaking from Strasbourg, the Sinn Féin MEP said:

“I welcome the passage through parliament this week of the Green Claims Directive. For too long, we have allowed companies to hide behind unfounded environmental claims.”

“Irish consumers want to spend their money on products that are good for the environment. Unfortunately, many companies are taking advantage of that, and making false environmental claims in order to boost their sales.”

“Companies will no longer be able to get away with greenwashing; instead, clear criteria has been established for proving environmental claims and labels.”

“It is important that Irish consumers can be assured that they are not being misled when buying a product. The proof is in the pudding: companies must live up to their green credentials, or cease claim to them.” ENDS
