Choice on housing in next general election ‘clear’ – more of the same or tens of thousands of affordable homes – Eoin Ó Broin TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Housing, Eoin Ó Broin TD, has said the choice on housing in the next general election is clear; “More of the same, or tens of thousands of affordable homes”.

Teachta Ó Broin was responding to comments from Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien today at Cabinet.

The Dublin Mid-West TD said:

“The housing record of the current Government is clear.

“They are almost four years in office. During that time house prices and rents have reached record highs and are continuing to rise. Homelessness is at record levels. The Governments own inadequate social and affordable housing targets are being missed every single year.

“Today at Cabinet, Minister O’Brien confirmed what we all know. The Government has no new proposals to address the deepening housing crisis. Nothing to bring house prices and rents down. Nothing to stop homelessness rising.

“Crucially, there are no plans to immediately increase the targets for social and affordable housing and to ensure those targets are met.

“The consequence of all of this will be an ever-deepening housing crisis. A generation of young people are being locked out of affordable homes and forced to emigrate.

“A growing number of people approaching pension age are living in an expensive and insecure private rental sector. Social housing waiting lists are growing and what little affordable housing is being delivered by Government is in many cases beyond the reach of most working people.

“The choice in the next general election couldn’t be clearer. More of the same from a failing Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael Government whose housing plan is making things worse, or a Sinn Féin led Government with a housing plan that will deliver tens of thousands of affordable homes for working people.”
