British government delay on Pat Finucane inquiry must end – Hargey

Sinn Féin MLA Deirdre Hargey has welcomed today’s court ruling which backs the Finucane family’s fight for truth and justice into their father’s murder.

Reiterating calls for the establishment of a public inquiry without delay, the party’s justice spokesperson said:

“Today’s ruling in the Court of Appeal is a positive step forward in an effort to achieve truth and justice for the Finucane family.

“This was an empathic dismissal of the British government’s appeal and now places an onus on the new government to work with the Finucane family to agree a way forward. If this is not successful, the court will then step in and direct what should happen next.

“Geraldine Finucane and her family have fought with dignity and determination for decades in the face of dithering and delay tactics from the British government to establish the full extent of what happened to her husband and their children’s father.

“The new government must now act in good faith, honour the commitment the previous Labour government made over twenty years ago and initiate an inquiry which meets the standards of Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights.”
