Barristers strike another sign of ailing justice system – Pa Daly TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice, Pa Daly TD, has today commented on the decision of criminal law barristers to withdraw their services again on three forthcoming days.

The withdrawal is an escalation of previous action in October of last year.

Teachta Daly said:

“There is little doubt that barristers are key to the smooth functioning of the criminal justice system. They both prosecute crimes and defend citizens in court, and essentially act as contractors to the state in these roles.

“Last October, an effective work stoppage took place, with services withdrawn for one day. The government made an announcement of a review of the level of fees paid in last year’s budget, but this has yet to commence.

“There is a requirement for decent remuneration for barristers, to maintain standards and to ensure people from diverse backgrounds can break into the profession.

“I will soon meet with barristers to discuss the withdrawal of services, and I would call on the government to make good on their own commitments.

“Efficiencies have been delivered by the profession, but without a proper review of pay, meaning inflation has, in reality, reduced remuneration for many.”
