Sinn Féin spokesperson on Housing, Eoin Ó Broin TD, has accused the government of ‘inaction’ as the latest Department of Housing homeless report shows another record set in May.
Teachta Ó Broin said:
“The latest Department of Housing homeless report shows a significant monthly increase in adult, family and child homelessness in May.
“Last month there were 14,159 people including 4,316 children in Department of Housing-funded emergency accommodation.
“Since the government ended the ban on no-fault evictions in April 2023, homelessness has increased by 15%. Child homelessness has increased by 20%. Pensioner homelessness has increased by 25%.
“Month after month, these figures rise but the government refuses to make any changes to its failing housing plan. So, another month of government inaction sees homelessness numbers rise again.
“This government has neither the will nor the policies to tackle the escalating homeless crisis. How could they, they are the cause of that crisis.
“Only a change of government and a new housing plan that prioritises ending homelessness through increasing and accelerating the delivery of social and affordable homes can bring an end to Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael’s housing and homelessness crisis.”
