Sinn Féin TD for Waterford, David Cullinane, has called on government leaders to step up and make a positive decision on the runway extension proposal for Waterford Airport.
Teachta Cullinane reiterated the case for the runway extension with government ministers this morning, emphasising that it is in the interest of balanced regional development and that the extension is necessary if there is to be a chance of commercial activity at the airport.
Speaking today, Teachta Cullinane said:
“It is now decision time for the government on the proposed runway extension at Waterford Airport.
“Government signed off on this proposal in principle in 2019 and sought further information. The airport submitted its most up-to-date proposal in April, and it is hoped that this will be the end of the years-long back and forth. It seems that all of the information has been provided and it is over to the government to act.
“The three local authorities stand ready to invest, and there is a strong case for regional investment at a time when Dublin Airport is under pressure and future capacity is disputed. Investment in Waterford makes sense but there is no chance of commercial activity without the runway extension.
“It is time for the Minister to stop dithering and make a decision. Action is now needed from government leaders to deliver the expansion. Sinn Féin will not be found wanting and we are committed to making this happen.”
