0.7% Budget increase a slap in the face of the Arts – Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

(Gaeilge thíos)

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Gaeilge, Gaeltacht, Arts and Culture, Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD, has blasted the announcement today in Budget 2024 that current funding for the arts is increasing by just 0.7%.

The Dublin South Central TD said:

“This is frankly a slap in the face for the artistic community, who have repeatedly been told Minister Catherine Martin is championing their needs.

“This is evidently not the case. Only €2 million extra in current funding is being budgeted for the entire arts sector.

“Putting that into context, Sinn Féin’s alternative budget made provision for over ten times that.

“We would have delivered €27.5 million extra in current funding alone for the arts and culture programme.

“The Arts Council would have received an increase of €4.9 million under a Sinn Féin Arts Minister in 2024, as a first step towards achieving a €150 million budget for the Arts Council over one term in Government, delivering on the aims of the National Campaign for the Arts and ensuring money gets to artists and supports creativity in communities nationwide.

“This Budget on the other hand seems to be keeping the Arts Council on last year’s level of funding, despite inflation, and instead prioritises extra funding for the Department-run Culture Ireland. This appears to be a repudiation of the principle that new arts funding should be distributed at arms-length from the Minister, and could even be interpreted as an attack on the independence of the arts.

“Whatever about that, one thing is clear: this Government clearly does not value the arts.

“Sinn Féin stands with our artists, musicians, performers, writers, creatives, and cultural workers who deserve better.

“A Sinn Féin Government would deliver better.”

Buille sa phus do na hEalaíona is a an ardú 0.7% Buiséad – Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Tá urlabhraí Gaeilge, Gaeltachta, Ealaíon agus Cultúir Shinn Féin, Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD, tar éis cáineadh géar a dhéanamh ar an fhógra sa Bhuiséad inniu do 2024 nach bhfaighfidh na healaíona ach ardú 0.7% ar an maoiniú reatha.

Dúirt an Teachta Dála ar son Baile Átha Cliath Theas Láir:

“I ndáiríre is buille sa phus é seo don phobal ealaíon, atá tar éis cloisteáil go rialta go bhfuil an tAire Catherine Martin ag troid go láidir ar son a riachtanais.

“Is léir nach fíor sin. Níl ach €2 milliún breise molta don mhaoiniú reatha don éarnáil ealaíon ina iomlán.

“Chun comhthéacs a thabhairt dó sin, d’éirigh le buiséad malartach Shinn Féin os cionn deich n-oiread an fhigiúir sin a chur ar fáil.

“Chiallódh sé sin €27.5 milliún breise i maoiniú reatha amháin don chlár ealaíon agus cultúir.

“Bhfaighfeadh an Chomhairle Ealaíon ardú €4.9 milliún i 2024 faoi Aire Ealaíon Shinn Féin, céad chéim i dtreo buiséad €150 milliún a bhaint amach don Chomhairle Ealaíon thar téarma amháin i Rialtas, ag freastal ar éileamh an Fheachtais Náisiúnta ar son na hEalaíona, agus ag cinntiú go dtéann airgead ar aghaidh go healaíontóirí agus chun tacú leis an gcruthaíocht sa phobal fud fad na tíre.

“I gcodarsnacht leis sin, is cosúil go bhfuil sé i gceist sa Bhuiséad seo an Chomhairle Ealaíon a choimeád ar leibhéal maoinithe na bliana seo caite, in ainneoin boilsciú, agus tá tús áite tugtha do mhaoiniú breise do Chultúr Éireann atá faoi riar na Roinne féin. Tá cuma air an scéal go bhfuil an prionsabal páirtspléach á shéanadh ag an Aire maidir le maoiniú nua ealaíon a dháileadh, agus d’fhéadfá glacadh leis fiú mar ionsaí ar neamhspleáchas na n-ealaíon.

“Pé scéal é, tá rud amháin soiléir: ní thuigeann an Rialtas seo luach na n-ealaíon.

“Seasann Sinn Féin lenár n-ealaíontóirí, ceoltóirí, taibhseoirí, scríbhneoirí, cruthaitheoirí, agus oibrithe cultúir, agus tá níos fearr tuillte acu.

“Bheadh níos fearr faighte acu faoi Rialtas Shinn Féin.”
