“Crucial Ireland elects MEPs prepared to stand up for workers’ rights” – MEP MacManus issues May Day Warning

Sinn Féin MEP for Midlands North-West, Chris MacManus has stressed the importance of electing MEPs who are prepared to stand up for the interests of workers and not big business.

MacManus was speaking on International Workers Day, where he highlighted the recent Platform Workers Directive as an example of the importance of MEPs who have the backs of workers.

MEP MacManus said:

“International Workers Day is an opportunity to celebrate all workers in our communities, the advocates who have fought for their rights and for those who continue to fight for workers’ rights.

“We must continue to advocate and stand up for the rights of workers and families, particularly now, as many of them are being squeezed out of homeownership and the rental market.

“We need MEPs who are prepared to stand up for the rights of workers, as much of the legislation that comes through the European Parliament relates to Employment and Social Affairs. An example of this is the recent Platform Directive, a crucial workers’ rights legislation protecting platform workers such as delivery riders.”

“We have witnessed certain representatives within the European institutions advocating on behalf of big business, who make massive profits on the backs of workers, rather than advocating for the workers themselves. We must stand up against this unfairness.”

MacManus concluded,
“Sinn Féin is committed to delivering for workers and families. A strong Sinn Féin team of MEPs will have workers backs in the next parliamentary term. We want to stand up for workers. We want to stand up for Ireland.” ENDS
