Deirdre Hargey

Deirdre Hargey MLA (South Belfast)

Deirdre Hargey has been involved in community and political activity in South Belfast for her entire adult life including the successful local campaign for “Sunshine not Skyscrapers” in the Market area.

From 2010 to 2019 she was a Belfast City Councillor for the Botanic DEA.  Deirdre was honoured in 2018 to be elected as Mayor of Belfast.

In that role, she championed a rights-based agenda, including the Irish language, marriage equality, LGBT rights, and women’s and workers’ rights.

In December 2019, Deirdre became an MLA for South Belfast and was soon appointed as Minister of Communities in the Executive.

As the pandemic began, Deirdre immediately ensured measures were taken to protect the North’s most vulnerable people and sectors, and as Minister she has introduced the biggest shake-up of the housing system in the North in 50 years.

She is currently working on legislation to protect renters from eviction and poor housing standards.

Deirdre was also central to the process to bring the long-awaited Casement Park redevelopment to fruition.
