Tourism strategy must be eco-friendly – Mason

Sinn Féin MLA Cathy Mason has said a tourism strategy in a new Executive must be eco-friendly and sustainable.

Speaking following the publication of the National Trust’s Climate Adaptation Report, the party’s tourism spokesperson said:

“Any tourism strategy in a new Executive must ensure that it is sustainable and compliant with environmental protections.

“I have spoken to many hoteliers, pubs and restaurants and seen first hand the commitment these businesses are making to reduce emissions in order to become sustainable. This example must be the basis for shaping all tourism policy going forward.

“The National Trust report indicates that 70% of land in care of the National Trust is at risk by 2060.

“Just in the last few weeks alone we have seen the impact of climate breakdown with flooding across my own constituency of South Down to the detriment of homes, businesses and our environment.

“We need an Executive restored now and all parties working together to protect our environment and grow tourism here on a sustainable basis.”
